Liberty bridge

Project type: Architectural competition, Landscape design, bicycle bridge
Size: Approximately 700 meter in length

The contest had as a goal to make a concept of a bicycle bridge over the central river IJ in Amsterdam. The first issue we did encountered when designing the bridge were how the bridge would connect the bicycle paths on the opposite sides of the river. This transition needed to be as natural as possible.

The already built bridge at IJ served as a perfect starting point, being so close to Amsterdam central. The bridge also needed a good exit-transition, which is why a spiral park near the marina where incorporated in the project.

Another issue of the project where the intended connection over the river IJ. Amsterdam is one of the biggest commersial harbours in the world which means that large container ships were traversing the river in large numbers every day. This had a impact on how the bridge could be designed. We designed the bridge as a arc over the water so that the pedestrians and bikers could freely pass the bridge. The middle of the bridge were also made wider to make room for a place which pedestrians and bikers could rest and be able to overlook the central parts of Amsterdam.
