Lychnidos Nautica

Project type: Architectural competition, Nautical club, Public space, Re-purpose
Size: 1500 m2

In this project, We wanted to keep as much of the original buildings as possible. When the number of rooms and premises that were in demand was assessed, We began to investigate how to add new buildings to the site. These new buildings needed to have a function but also needed to blend in well with the main building. This first stage resulted in an open patio/ courtyard surrounding a swimming pool. From this area a visitor can reach the stage where activities can be planned, the Lycknidos Nauticas reception, the children’s playroom, the conference room and the relaxing peace garden with two small yoga studios attached to it. You can also easily enter the main building that is the main focus on the site.

The main building were the most important when it came to design and took the most time to fully investigate how the spaces and the structure could be utilized for a new role in present day. We also started to investigate how to make the building “pop” from the other buildings on the site. Our conclusion to this was a roof that expands from the eaves, this makes a visitor direct their gaze towards the main building as soon as you enter the Lycknidos Nautica. This building is also the only one with two floors, which means that it is also easily recognised as the main structure on the site. In this building a restaurant, a bar, a small administration office and a gym can be located by a visitor.

Another important aspect to consider is also how vehicles, people and the nautical equipment will move on the site. Our idea was simple, make the site easily accessible to all. Clear paths, with minimum effort for people to move around on the site. We also wanted the view from the main building to be as it is today, unrestrained. Lastly, we intended to make the nautical storage area like a hangar, easily to use and close to the sea. It also has a large grass area in front of it, to make repairs, plan and organise how the equipment could be used.
